Luke Santi Memorial Award

Established and funded by Perimeter Institute, this award is presented annually in memory of Luke Santi, who as a high school student demonstrated a passion for research and discovery, earned top marks in his courses, took part in a variety of extracurricular activities, and volunteered his time in service of others.

In honour of Luke's many accomplishments and contributions, the award is presented annually to a Canadian student who demonstrates Luke's many qualities - academic performance, interest in science, extracurricular activities, and volunteering – and is graduating high school to begin post-secondary education in Physical Sciences at a Canadian university.

Award Details

The award includes $1000 and the opportunity to visit Perimeter Institute for a tour, lunch with researchers and staff, and seminars or other scheduled events. One award will be made each year to a graduating Canadian high school student who has been accepted into a full-time academic program in Physical Sciences at a Canadian university in the fall. The successful student is expected to direct the award towards tuition for studies in physics.

Selection Criteria

The student is selected based on a combination of academic merit and non-academic criteria including:

A) Academic success in the last year of secondary studies - a minimum 80% average overall is required as shown in copies of official high school transcripts.

B) Demonstrated passion for physics outside of the normal academic environment (e.g. being a member of a local amateur astronomy club, volunteering with a physics association)

C) Demonstrated interest in a wide range of activities outside of physics (e.g. community involvement, sports, debating clubs, etc., including volunteer activities in service of others)

D) Minimum of two letters of recommendation by a teacher, principal, professor or association leader (not a relative). The letters of reference will assist the selection committee in establishing the applicant's participation and achievement in the life and activities of their school and/or community; participation in a physics stream of study; nature of the participant's character, personal qualities and temperament, etc.

As they progress through life, these skills will be carried with them as they become successful adults in the community. Scouts Canada sees this scholarship program as an investment in the lives of the future leaders of tomorrow.

Scouts Canada is pleased to award scholarships of up to $6,000 each. The application process is the same for all scholarships. It is up to the adjudication to award the various scholarships in the specific categories

St. John's College: Are you attending the University of Manitoba in the fall?

St John’s College is a small college situated on the north perimeter of the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus. The College invites any student who has been accepted by a faculty or school of the University of Manitoba to become a member. College members receive their degrees from the U of M, and enjoy complete access to all courses, services and facilities of both the University of Manitoba and St John’s College. While the University of Manitoba has over 30,000 students, only 1000 are members of St John’s, making it much easier for students to make social and academic connections and feel at home on campus.

We understand that the pandemic has affected student lives and as such, we continue to focus on enriching students’ university experiences, as best as possible. The College adapted its operations to address the health and safety concerns brought about by the coronavirus. Since the closure of the Fort Garry Campus due to COVID-19, St John’s College has maintained its residence operations and continued to safely provide housing and food to students who were unable to return home, or had nowhere else to live. As the university transitions towards a gradual re-opening, we are hopeful to increase our support to students as well.

St John’s College provides a home base where they can meet other students through our Jumpstart program in September or through intramural sports and social events organized by the St John’s College Student Association. There are lockers, study facilities (including private carrels) and a computer lab at the College, so College members have a place to study between classes. They also get a 10% discount at the Daily Bread Café and Pizza Joe (located in our building), which means they’ll always be fuelled up with coffee and snacks for crunch time!

Student Residence:

Commuter students can sometimes have trouble connecting to campus. St John’s College Residence is an excellent option for students looking for a more immersive university experience. Our residence is a diverse community of 100 residents. The residence is all single dorm style rooms and includes a full meal plan.

Academic Support:

At St John’s, students can access additional, personalized support. The College Registrar is trained in academic coaching and can provide guidance for College members in their studies. The Chaplain holds volunteer events, runs discussion groups, and is also available for all students who need someone to talk to about their problems, be they spiritual, social or personal.

Scholarships/Bursaries:

Finally, St John’s College members are eligible for more than $125,000 in exclusive awards, bursaries and scholarships. There are a number of scholarships specifically for first-year students coming straight from high school. The deadline to apply is April 1st or July 31st (depending on the award), so make sure you are ready!

For more information, you can visit our website at University of Manitoba - St. John's College (umanitoba.ca)

For specific questions related to any of our programs or services, please feel free to contact our front desk at 204-474-8531. If you wish, you can also set up a visit to St John’s for yourself.
