TERRY FOX HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Valued at $28,000 The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award is one of Canada's most established and prestigious awards.

Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to students of all abilities.

To be considered for the Award, applicants must meet be:

  • In good academic standing.
  • Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
  • Students graduating from secondary (high) school or students completing their first year of CÉGEP or students who have completed secondary (high) school
  • Involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated).
  • Planning to or are already studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution, or entering their 2nd year of CÉGEP in the upcoming academic year.

The Award is highly competitive, and we consider the most suitable candidates to be those who demonstrate the ideals of Terry Fox: 

  • true humanitrairan
  • compassionate 
  • altruistic in their intention to improve the lives of others 
  • 'does' with the ability to inspire and make a positive impact on the lives of others.
  • have experienced and overcome an insurmountable obstacle, yet remained dedicated to helping others.
  • demonstrated tenacity in the face of adversity

Value

The maximum value of the award is $28,000, dispersed over four (4) years. A stipend of $7,000 is issued directly to the institution each year in two installments of $3,500, one in September and one in January. For students who do not pay tuition fees, the award is $3,500 per year, issued directly to the institution in two installments of $1,750 each.

Recipients of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award may not receive more than $15,000 in total scholarships annually (including the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award). If a student’s awards exceed this amount, any excess will be deducted from the student’s Terry Fox Award.

If a student’s academic expenses are covered by another source, they may choose to decline acceptance of the financial portion of the award. They will still be granted the distinction of being a Terry Fox Scholar.

Important Upcoming IN CLASS Post-Secondary Information Presentation Schedule

Good morning Grade 12s! Ms. Mathu will be coming to your classes to go over Post-Secondary Information and Mrs. Morran will be talking to you about scholarships and financing your education dream! LIVE presentations will begin on Oct 18th and will take at least one full period and perhaps may spill over into the next period as well.

COHORT RE AA: Your presentation is scheduled in PERIOD 3 on OCTOBER 18th. You don't have Gym this day but we are requesting that ALL STUDENTS from this cohort stay after your period 2 class in Room 5 (Mrs. Zubricki: Math Pre-Cal) for the presentation. BMO Indigenous Leader of Tomorrow

The BMO Financial Group Indigenous Leader of Tomorrow scholarship program highlights exceptional Indigenous high school graduates who combine outstanding leadership potential with academic giftedness. Each scholarship is valued at $16,000, allocated over four years of study.

Three awards will be given out to Indigenous students across Canada entering any of the direct-entry programs at the University of Manitoba.

BMO Financial Group Indigenous Leader of Tomorrow Scholarships will be offered to students who:

  1. are Indigenous (Status, Non-Status, Métis, Inuit); 
  2. have achieved a high school average of at least 90 per cent calculated on the basis of results in (or equivalent courses across Canada):
    1. English 30S or Français 30S and Anglais 30S 
    2. Mathematics 30S (either pre-calculus 30S or applied 30S only) 
    3. the highest marks in three of Biology 30S, Chemistry 30S, Physics 30S, History 30S, Geography 30S, Computer Science 30s, or a language at the 30S level other than those accepted for (1.1) above; 
  3. have demonstrated evidence of leadership qualities and future potential; 
  4. have demonstrated evidence of a high level of communication skills; 
  5. have a record of community involvement (e.g., school, local community, city-wide, regional, national, international); 
  6. have demonstrated evidence of special abilities other than those shown by academic results (e.g., artistic, athletic, or linguistic skills, literary accomplishments); 
  7. have completed a University of Manitoba application for admission by the December 1 deadline, including payment of application fee. 

Recipients will be required to present a minimum 90 per cent average based on those courses eligible for the University of Manitoba General Entrance Scholarships.

New application submission instructions for 2022/23:

  • applicants must select which award they are applying for before submitting the application (i.e. BMO Leader of Tomorrow Scholarships or BMO Indigenous Leader of Tomorrow Scholarships);
  • references from the principal, counsellor/teacher and community member must be received by the December 1st deadline date.

TD Scholarships for Community Leadership

 

What are the TD Scholarships for Community Leadership?

The TD Scholarship for Community Leadership awards students up to $70,000 for college or university (up to $10,000 for tuition per year, $7,500 a year for living expenses) for 4 years. It’s open to students across Canada who:

  • Have demonstrated community leadership
  • Are in final year of high school 
  • Have a minimum overall grade average of 75% in their most recently completed school year

1. Write a 600-word essay describing your community leadership experience.

  • Why you got involved
  • How your involvement shows initiative and innovation
  • The ways your efforts have strengthened others
  • How long you have been involved
  • What you think the long-term impact will be
  • How your community has affected you

2. Tell us about the other great things you’re doing. Include a brief description of the range of your other community activities with:

  • A letter of recommendation from your school
  • Two letters of support from community groups 
  • Your academic transcript

3. If you’re really trying to impress, you also have the option of including:

  • A 250-word essay describing your family and personal life, for example your family’s employment or economic situation
  • A 250-word essay about your life experiences if you have taken a year or more away from high school or CEGEP
